Dimethicone is a silicone-based polymer (oil) that provides the silky, smooth texture often found in moisturizers and cream-based products. A natural emollient, anti-foaming agent and skin protective barrier, dimethicone has been declared safe for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) and the Skin Deep Database. Thanks to its fluid property, dimethicone helps creams and serums to slide easily across the skin, forming a satiny barrier against urban pollutants and harsh weather conditions, and thus retaining skin moisture.
1,2-hexanediol is a light, colorless liquid solvent that helps to dissolve other ingredients. Clinically tested and proven to be safe, this synthetic humectant (moisture-retaining agent) is widely used in personal care and cosmetics.
Cetrimonium chloride is an antiseptic and conditioning agent that also functions as a surfactant, reducing surface tension between other ingredients. This ingredient helps to cleanse skin, prevent the growth of microorganisms, and distribute insoluble solids in liquids to form emulsions.
Isohexadecane is a dry-finish smoothing agent most commonly used as a skin conditioner in cosmetics. Though rich and creamy, it is non-greasy, making it an ideal ingredient for moisturizing products. Isohexadecane is also used as a cleansing ingredient in makeup removers.
Allantoin is a nitrogenic compound sourced from the Comfrey plant. Thanks to its anti-irritation properties, Allantoin has been a key ingredient in many over-the-counter (OTC) moisturizers for dry, flaky skin, as well as emollients that target more serious skin conditions, such as eczema, abrasions, ulcers, and mild burns.
Panthenol serves a humectant and emollient in skin care. Once applied onto skin, panthenol converts into pantothenic acid, which then effectively penetrates into deeper layers of the epidermis and optimizes the effects of accompanying ingredients. An alcohol derived from vitamin B, panthenol also mixes well with different ingredients.
Methyl Gluceth-20 is a gentle water-binding agent often found in moisturizers and serums. Derived from corn sugar and starch, Methyl Gluceth-20 also helps to retain moisture and tease open pores, allowing for effective skin cleansing.
Cyclopentasiloxane is a lightweight silicone derivative that has been cleared for use by the CIR. Primarily used as a lubricant and conditioning agent, Cyclopentasiloxane also temporarily fills in pores and wrinkles, offering the illusion of smoother, more radiant skin.
Derived from starch, dimethyl isosorbide that increases the penetrability of other active skin care ingredients, such as ferric acid and its derived esters, allowing them to work on deeper layers of the epidermis. Dimethyl isosorbide also functions as a solvent in skin care products.
